Waiting for Friends to Come to the Bar

People like to drink things (like beer and liquor). People like to celebrate things (like birthdays and promotions). It only makes sense that people sometimes chose to celebrate things by getting drunk. Having a party at a bar is a lot easier than having to get enough food and drinks for all your friends and you don’t have to clean up after. Someone will say that everyone’s meeting at the bar at 10:30, and you decide you will get there half an hour later so you wont be the first one there.

But the universe knows that you were thinking that, so when you show up half and hour late, you are still there before everyone else. Waiting for friends to come to the bar is an art. You have to grab a drink, because you can’t be empty-handed when people do show up. You sip it slowly and whip out your phone to pass the time. You’ll text a few friends and tell them to hurry up. You just hope that nobody is watching you, wondering about the quiet guy in the corner who is obviously alone on a Saturday night.

Time flies when you’re having fun, but it comes to a standstill when you’re waiting for friends to come to the bar. You’ll glance at the time, look around the room, answer a text, have a sip or two of your drink, and glance at the time again and it’s still the same time. So you take another sip, read a coaster, pretend to be watching the game on TV, and look at the time again and it’s still the same time.

The only good thing about waiting for people to show up is that you have access to lots and lots of booze. Maybe waiting at the bar isn’t so bad after all.

Lagunitas Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’ Ale

Lagunitas is a California microbrewery that is best known for its IPAs. This Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’ Ale is something else. It’s a wheat ale and it’s pretty hoppy too. My taste buds aren’t that sophisticated but I like this beer. I especially like the 7.5% alcohol content. I like beers that taste good and get me drunk. And you seem more classy when you’re drinking a microbrew. If you’re lucky enough to see Lagunitas on tap or on the display shelf you should get it.

Forgetting Which Beer is Yours

People drink. And people drink socially. One unfortunate byproduct of drinking with other people is that a few other people will have the same drink as you. It’s not a big deal if everyone holds on to their drink the entire time the whole time, but that’s not going to happen. You’ll set your beer down to go to the bathroom or to go out to smoke. And other people will do the same. You’ll come back to your spot and see three identical beers where you left your suds. Forgetting which beer is yours sucks, but if you’re not sure which one is yours then just take whichever one has more beer left.

Which Drink to Grab when Double Fisting

Double fisting is not sexual slang, it’s when you get two drinks at once. After a stressful day at work, or a regular day at work, or a day off from work it’s nice to go to the local watering hole and grab a drink. But it’s pointless to grab just one drink because you know that you will have another one soon. So you should get two drinks. And you should mix it up because variety is nice. So you get an IPA and a Jack & Coke. You settle down and relax a bit, switching between your fluids and making friendly conversation. But you have to pay attention to which drink to grab when double fisting. You don’t want to run out of your beer before you finish your Jack & Coke and vice versa. It’s a balancing act and a delicate one at that. So mind the stepchildren and stay aware.

Lagunitas Maximus

The Lagunitas Brewing Company is known for their IPA. Their Maximus India Pale Ale has more alcohol and is hoppier. Wikipedia says it has a spicy finish with a lot of rose petal. Maybe my palate isn’t sophisticated because I don’t taste the rose petal. I think Wikipedia is lying. Anyway, 8.2% alcohol is pretty decent; it can definitely make you sleepy. Lagunitas is a great microbrewery. If you ever see it at the liquor store you should grab it. And read the label; they usually have a funny and random rant printed on it.

White Hawk Select IPA

The fine folks at Mendocino Brewing Company of Ukiah, CA have crafted another delicious microbrew. White Hawk Select IPA in an India Pale Ale that has a decent amount of flavor and a decent 7.0% alcohol content. This isn’t the best IPA, but it’s one of the better cheaper microbrewed IPAs. Mendocino Brewing Co. has some pretty decent brews. If you see it, you should get it, you won’t regret it. And even if you do regret it, I don’t care. Never trust the internet. This is just a filler article anyway.

Just One Drink

Just one drink at the bar is never just one drink. One drink turns into two drinks, which turns into four drinks, and before you know it, you are shitfaced and the bar is closing. The problem is approaching the bar with that “I’m only going to have a drink” mentality. It’s like approaching a grocery store, you have to know which particular thing you want, or you end up filling your cart. If you only want a beer or a gin & tonic, that’s ok. That is something specific that you came into the bar for. If you just want a drink, no matter what you get you are still unsatisfied, you are still thirsty. After whatever the first round is, you feel the need to switch it up and get something harder. If you started with beer, now it’s time for a jack and coke. If you started with a jack and coke, now it’s time for a shot. If you started with a shot, it’s time to double fist and take a random pill.

Most of the time when I get just one drink, it’s to kill time after work. I’ll go to the local dive bar and grab a drink and bitch about customers. And then someone will call or text and say that they are on their way. So I have to have just one more drink with them. It’s only polite, right?

Ninkasi Tricerahops Double IPA

If there’s anything better than a microbrewed IPA, it is a microbrewed double IPA. If there’s anything better than a microbrewed double IPA, it is a microbrewed double IPA with a dinosaur pun. It is super malty and super hoppy. It has a hefty 8.8% alcohol content, which is better than Nyquil for getting kids to sleep. Good strong beer with lots of flavor and a dinosaur pun for a name. It doesn’t get much better than this.

Shock Top Wheat IPA

Anheuser-Busch presents Shock Top Wheat IPA. It’s a very refreshing IPA variant. It has a hefty 5.8% alcohol content, more than most wheat beers, but less than most IPAs. It’s unfiltered, which helps gives it more of a wheat beer taste than an IPA. It is a perfect hybrid of the two… if you aren’t sure if you want a Hefe/Blue Moon or an IPA, this is the beer for you. Decisions are hard to make when just wanna be drunk, so get this and start drinking.

Bud Light Platinum

There used to be a very simple test to determine one’s cheapness. If a person goes to a bar or restaurant and orders a Bud Light, they are cheap. Ordering a Bud Light is one step up from ordering an ice water, a bunch of lemons, and a shit ton of sugar packets to make your own lemonade. But now there is Bud Light Platinum, and as much as I love to bash Bud drinkers, this is the new light beer of choice. It has a hefty 6% alcohol content, and it still tastes like a light beer. Bottom line is that it is super drinkable and that alcohol percentage will sneak up on you. Anheuser-Busch finally realized that giving Bud Light a wheaty or lime flavor isn’t nearly as awesome as making a light beer that will fuck you up faster.

Red Stripe Jamaican Lager

“Red Stripe. It’s beer. Hooray, beer!” See that’s is effective advertising. Good job whoever came up with that one. It’s memorable, it says the product name, and it says what the product is.  It has a nice light, crisp taste, better than your average American lager like Bud or Coors. It is very drinkable and refreshing. The major downside is that the bottles are only 11.2 ounces, as opposed to 12 ounces, so you aren’t getting a full six pack. That’s pretty lame, they lose points for that.

Foster’s

Foster’s. Australian for beer. Sorry, I was obligated to say that. It really is Australian, there’s even a picture of a kangaroo on the can. This is a pretty decent lager, it is better tasting and more flavorful than typical American lagers. My friend lived in Australia for a few months and he said that no one drinks it down there. I’m kind of disillusioned now.

Bud Light Lime

A typical American swill lager with a twist – a lime twist. My guess is that the trolls at Anheuser-Busch finally realized that Bud Light has no flavor. They decided that they would add lime, and so they did. It’s not a bad idea. It actually makes it taste less like water. I hope that Corona takes note and copies them. Bud Light still sucks though.

Stella Artois

A premium lager from Belgium, this is very smooth and drinkable. Better than Budweiser and a little classier than Heineken. It could potentially be the best lager in its class. I know some people who add a little ground pepper to it. It gives it a little kick and doesn’t fuck up the beer so try it out. You might just like it. If you are out on the town and want a Bud, but don’t want to order it, get this beer and after a few rounds, you will be enamored.

Kona Longboard Island Lager

The Kona Brewing Company is from Hawaii, and this is their most well known beer. It is a clear, light, golden color. Very crisp and refreshing taste, better than Budweiser and other common American style lagers. Look for it on tap or in glass bottles. This beer is a staple feature in their 12 bottle variety pack.

Kona Pipeline Porter

Kona Brewing Co. from Hawaii presents this porter made with 100% Hawaiian Kona coffee. This is a seasonal brew. Americans love seasonal things. It’s a girl scout cookie mentality. Pipeline porter is a nice brown ale brewed with real coffee, a nice beer to have with dessert. If you see it on tap, you should try it. If you see it in a Kona 12 bottle multipack, you have to get it. Try this beer. There is more to beer than Budweiser. Live a little, and sip this beer.
