Adventure Day

Every couple of weeks I will get a random day off in the middle of the week and sometimes a friend will have the same day off too. I can’t afford to lose those days. I turn them into adventure days. An adventure day is when you go out and do a bunch of spontaneous activities. Go hiking, go biking, try spelunking. Go to the beach and dig a hole. Go to the park and climb a tree. Explore downtown and find a new restaurant to try, walk into a shop that you always walk by, or see how many pigeons it takes to eat a hot dog (it’s probably around seven). The point is that you have to take advantage of the time you have while you have it. And so you go on adventures. They don’t have to swashbuckling. They just have to be genuine. Adventure day doesn’t come around that often. Do it while you can.

Lazy Day

A lazy day is even better than a day off. You typically have a few errands and chores to do on your days off. But sometimes you have a day off where you don’t have to do anything, when you can procrastinate and be lazy the whole day. You’ll start by sleeping in a few extra hours. Then you’ll lie in bed reading or surfing the net for a few hours before you get up. You might pour yourself some cereal or stick a Hot Pocket in the microwave because you’re hungry but you’re not going to cook. You don’t take a shower because you’re not planning on impressing anybody. You don’t put on shoes because you’re not even going outside to check the mail. It’s a lazy day and nothing is going to get accomplished by design. It’s a good time to catch up on your TV shows, play a videogame, or watch that movie that you keep putting off. Fighting boredom while sitting on your ass is the epitome of a lazy day and the American way.

Picking Up a Coworker’s Shift

You have the day off and plan on taking advantage of it. Until your phone rings. It’s your coworker and she wants to know if you’ll pick up her shift today. You politely say no, but she senses weakness and keeps on pressing you. She starts begging and whining and bullshitting why she needs you to work for her. She starts offering incentives like picking up any shift that you don’t want. You know she won’t ever actually return the favor, but at this point you just agree to work for her so she’ll shut up. So she ends up with the day off and you end up at work. How did that happen? I guess it’s better to make money but I prefer being lazy.

Waking Up Early On Your Day Off

I typically work six days a week, meaning that I’ll only have one day off to relax. But I can’t relax because I usually have a bunch of neglected errands to run. At the very least, you should be able to sleep in on your day off, but sometimes you can’t. Sometimes you have to set your alarm because you have too much shit to do. Waking up early on your day off sucks. But you’re an adult now and you have to pretend to be responsible. Reality fucking blows. I’d rather sleep in.
