Taking Selfies with Someone Else’s Phone

It’s slow season at work so I get into a lot of mischief during my shifts now. One of my newest games is covertly taking selfies with someone else’s phone when they leave it unattended. You don’t need to know their passcode to access the camera so you can take a few random pictures or record a video without them knowing about it. I will take selfies and group shots of me and all of my accomplices, or record a quick video, and sneakily replace their phone without them knowing. Then you sit back and wait for them to discover it. Sometimes it happens right away, sometimes you have to wait a few minutes or hours, and sometimes it takes days. It’s always a funny reaction. There are a few rules to the game. Pick your targets well. Some people don’t like it when you use their stuff without asking. I wouldn’t recommend taking any crotch shots or capturing anything illegal. It should just be funny faces or middle fingers, nothing that will cause any distress. If you take selfies with someone else’s phone, expect to have someone taking selfies with your phone as payback. It’s all part of the game, so make sure you really want to play before you click the shutter button.

End of the Year Facebook Montage

2014 is winding down and I don’t even need a calendar to know that. I just have to go on Facebook. As soon as I do, I’m bombarded by all of the End of the Year Facebook montages that everybody is posting. They are all the same. They start with a caption that reads, “It’s been a great year! Thanks for being a part of it.” Then it starts breaking down their year by displaying their most trafficked pictures. It’s all the same. There’s a picture of a wedding or an engagement, there’s a picture from some sporting event, there’s a couple of friends at bars or parties, and a few shots from vacations or day trips. It’s kind of weird how everyone has different lives but still do the exact same shit. There are so many End of the Year Facebook montages that you can’t watch them all. You have to choose which ones to watch, and you’re going to choose the ones that will most likely include a picture of you. You tell yourself that you’re not going to give in and do one of your own, but curiosity sets in and you’ll see what your year looks like in review. And you’ll kind of like it because you forgot how awesome your year actually was. Then you’ll share it because everybody else is doing it too and you don’t want to jump on the bandwagon too late.

Snapchat

Snapchat is a social media app. It’s the trendy thing that all the cool kids are doing right now. The premise of Snapchat is simple. You take pictures and videos and share them with friends and followers. The hook is that the videos and pictures can only be viewed briefly before they disappear. It’s great for sexting, but you can also use it as a personal video journal of sorts. You can share a snippet of a concert or sunset with friends. You can show everybody that weird guy at the grocery store instead of merely describing him later on. I got Snapchat a couple of months ago and I use it a couple of times a day on average. Mostly I’m watching whatever my friends send me, but I’ve been known to do a few Snaps when I’m drunk or bored (or both). I mostly take selfies with something weird in the background, like a toilet bowl or a coworker eating lunch. The most important thing about Snapchat is being aware that it will notify the other person if you take a screen shot of something they sent you. Remember that when you’re sending pictures of your cooter out, ladies.

Vertical Filming

Vertical filming is when you record a video on your smartphone without first rotating it 90 degrees. The end result is a tall and narrow video that doesn’t look natural. We see in landscape mode, not portrait mode. Movies and TV shows are often shot in widescreen. That’s what your eye wants to see. So the next time your friend does a drunken dance, flip your phone 90 degrees and record her shenanigans horizontally. You’ll notice you get a lot more hits on YouTube and more shares on Facebook. Film horizontally and save the world.

Vine (app, not the plant)

I finally caved and downloaded Vine for my iPhone the other day. Vine is an app for creating and sharing short videos. Each video is a maximum of thirty seconds long and it plays on a continuous loop. Less is more, and a lot of amazing stories can be told in 6 seconds or less. It doesn’t matter if you’re not a filmmaker or an artist; you still have a unique way of looking at the world and Vine is a great way to express yourself. You can do stop motion animation, you can do a few quick cuts, or you can do a long take… The possibilities are endless. You can do a million different things with six seconds. You can make someone laugh or you can change the world. So be creative. Use your imagination. And inspire other people to do the same.
