End of the Year Facebook Montage

2014 is winding down and I don’t even need a calendar to know that. I just have to go on Facebook. As soon as I do, I’m bombarded by all of the End of the Year Facebook montages that everybody is posting. They are all the same. They start with a caption that reads, “It’s been a great year! Thanks for being a part of it.” Then it starts breaking down their year by displaying their most trafficked pictures. It’s all the same. There’s a picture of a wedding or an engagement, there’s a picture from some sporting event, there’s a couple of friends at bars or parties, and a few shots from vacations or day trips. It’s kind of weird how everyone has different lives but still do the exact same shit. There are so many End of the Year Facebook montages that you can’t watch them all. You have to choose which ones to watch, and you’re going to choose the ones that will most likely include a picture of you. You tell yourself that you’re not going to give in and do one of your own, but curiosity sets in and you’ll see what your year looks like in review. And you’ll kind of like it because you forgot how awesome your year actually was. Then you’ll share it because everybody else is doing it too and you don’t want to jump on the bandwagon too late.

Snapchat

Snapchat is a social media app. It’s the trendy thing that all the cool kids are doing right now. The premise of Snapchat is simple. You take pictures and videos and share them with friends and followers. The hook is that the videos and pictures can only be viewed briefly before they disappear. It’s great for sexting, but you can also use it as a personal video journal of sorts. You can share a snippet of a concert or sunset with friends. You can show everybody that weird guy at the grocery store instead of merely describing him later on. I got Snapchat a couple of months ago and I use it a couple of times a day on average. Mostly I’m watching whatever my friends send me, but I’ve been known to do a few Snaps when I’m drunk or bored (or both). I mostly take selfies with something weird in the background, like a toilet bowl or a coworker eating lunch. The most important thing about Snapchat is being aware that it will notify the other person if you take a screen shot of something they sent you. Remember that when you’re sending pictures of your cooter out, ladies.

Colorized Old-Timey Photos

Nothing brings the past alive quite like colorized old-timey photos. You can gaze upon the daguerreotype of a forgotten Civil War soldier whose name has been lost to history, but you have evidence that he existed, proof of a moment that was captured on film well over a hundred years ago. Black and white photos from the past are beautiful in their own way, but colorizing them makes them more real and more relevant to the now. We see the world in color, not in shades of gray. The black and white pictures that you saw in you high school history textbook were interesting but had no meaning to you. The fire from the Hindenburg isn’t imposing until you add a little color and see the glow from the flames. You can stare into the face of Marilyn Monroe and see exactly what the producers, directors, and screenwriters saw in her that turned her into the poster girl for Hollywood actresses. You see a few familiar landmarks but an unfamiliar skyline from your city’s early years. That has impact, that has meaning. I’m sorry if you’re colorblind, but color is the key to reality or so it seems.

Looking at Old Pictures

Not many things make you more nostalgic than looking at old pictures. Yesterday my friend sent me a bunch of pictures of us that I’ve never seen before. Each picture takes me back to a different time, a different place, to a moment in time when all that mattered was that particular moment. Time is linear, but your memories are not. Some memories stick out more than others. You can remember things you did ten years ago in vivid detail, but you’ll forget what you had for lunch yesterday. Your memory is not perfect. But looking at old pictures will make you recall and remember things that you’ve forgotten about. Looking at old pictures is like stepping into a time machine and going back to the good old days, back to when the past was still the present. You can’t go back in time, but you can always reminisce.

Getting Sucked Into Your Timeline

I’m on Facebook a lot because I’m a product of my time. I make statuses, I check into places, I post pictures, I share articles, and I get tagged every single day. Every once in a while, I will log on and check out my profile. It’s like looking at your life from an outsider’s perspective. You’ll start looking at what other people have posted on your wall, and you’ll eventually start looking at old pictures. We don’t have actual photo albums anymore. Instead we have Facebook Timeline. It sucks that it’s not tangible, but it’s better in a lot of ways. You’ll stumble upon a picture of you and a group of friends that you never see anymore in a place that you never go to anymore. You’ll feel nostalgic and you can instantly tag them or message them to remind them about the glory days. It tells you when it was posted, so you can reflect on how much shit has changed since it was taken. Then you’ll click on another picture of another group of forgotten friends in another forgotten place. Then you click on another picture, and another bunch of memories come flooding back. Before you know it, three hours have passed and it’s time for bed. Getting sucked into your timeline is like picking up your yearbook from senior year, it’s a trip down memory lane.
