Untied Shoelaces

I live in San Francisco and I don’t have a car. Needless to say, I’m pretty good at walking. I walk a lot. I walk quickly and efficiently, like any good city dweller. You can stroll in the suburbs, but you have to walk at a brisk pace if you want to survive the city. The only thing that slows me down are elderly pedestrians that won’t get out of my way and occasionally untied shoelaces. I can’t do anything about old people, but I know how to deal with untied shoelaces. I simply tie them back up. Problem temporarily solved. I might even double knot them for added security. Untied shoelaces are dangerous. That’s why they invented Velcro and slip on shoes. Safety is always important, fashion can take a backseat.

Shoelace in Bike Chain

I remember riding my bike as a kid. I was fearless. My friends and I would ride down steep dirt hills, jump off rickety homemade ramps, and fly around blind corners all without a helmet. Helmets were for babies so we left that at home (it didn’t matter though, we were young and immortal). The only thing that I was afraid of was getting my shoelace stuck in the bike chain. It rarely caused any serious damage, but it was always terrifying to being racing downhill and having my chain suddenly lock up. All I could do was grip my handlebars tight and try to avoid any major obstacles until I finally slowed to a stop. Most times I was successful. A few times I wasn’t so lucky. I never broke any bones from getting a shoelace in a bike chain, though I did have a lot of uneven shoelaces growing up. It happened quite a few times. I don’t know why I didn’t ever double knot them. You live you learn. I don’t know if kids still play outside these days, but if they do please make sure they double knot their laces.

Double Knot

Safety comes first, so I always double knot my laces. A double knot is when you tie your shoelace loops together to keep them from getting untied. I ride a longboard around town, and double knotting my shoes is like wearing a helmet or elbow pads. It keeps me safe even though I might look like a fool.  A double knot is like insurance, it’s something that you invest in, it’s preventing an accident. The last thing you want is a loose shoelace when you’re bombing down a hill at thirty miles per hour. A double knot is the grownup’s equivalent of wearing Velcro straps. It’s just another way of ensuring that your shoe will stay on your foot no matter what. A double knot can save your life. Don’t knock it.

Aglets

Aglets are everywhere. There are hundreds, thousands, maybe even millions all around you right now. There are dozens in and around your home. You probably even have some on you right now. Don’t worry, I’m just building up suspense. Aglets are the plastic or metal tips on the ends of your shoelaces. They are practical: they keep the shoelace from unraveling, they make it easier to lace up your shoes, and you can use it to pack down the weed in a joint. That’s some MacGyver-style ingenuity right there. Aglets are everywhere, yet nobody mentions them. I’m going to start complimenting strangers for fashionable aglets. They’ve been underappreciated for way too long.
