Skipping Rocks

I found a rock the other day. It was lying on the ground next to some other rocks, but this rock stood out. It was gray, palm-sized, thin, and smooth. I picked it up and felt the weight of it in my palm. I wrapped my fingers around it. I appreciated the natural beauty of it. I felt compelled to skip it. If only I had a pond. Too bad. I had to put it back on the ground and pretended to be normal again. Skipping rocks is fun. It’s a great source of entertainment when you’re by a river, lake, or pond. You scour the ground for a good rock, and you briefly show it off when you find a good one. Then you whip your arm back and sling it across the surface of the water and count how many skips you get. You can get more than ten if you’re good. You’ll only get one if you suck. I’m not that good at skipping rocks. I think six is my record. Some people are really good at skipping rocks. It’s not an impressive talent, but it’s still a talent. There’s no money or glory in it, only a false sense of pride.

Picking Rocks from the Bottoms of Your Shoes

I went for a hike the other day. It was a real hike. I went on a trail and everything. I hiked a few miles out then I hiked a few miles back. When I got back to civilization I noticed that there were dozens of little rocks stuck in the treads of my shoes. I don’t like rocks in the bottom of my shoes. I sat down, pulled off my shoe, and used a little stick to poke out all the rocks. Then I did the same to the other shoe. I felt better once all the rocks were out. Picking rocks from the bottoms of your shoes will give you better traction and keep you from scuffing up hardwood floors. It also makes your shoes look better (at least the bottoms of them).

Rock-Paper-Scissors

Rock-paper-scissors is a classic playground game. Two opponents face off and choose one of three shapes (rock, paper, or scissors) and try to win a best of three series. A closed fist is a rock, two extended fingers are scissors, and an open hand is paper. Rock beats scissors, scissors beat paper, and paper beats rock.  Everyone knows this game, but some regions have their own name for it. Most of the world knows it as rock-paper-scissors, but I grew up calling it roshambo. I’ve also heard ick-ack-ock and paper-scissors-stone, but it really doesn’t matter what you call it, it’s still the same game. You would play it just to play it when you were a kid, but now you only play it to settle minor disputes with your friends. It’s still a good game though. You rely on luck and psyching out your opponent and it’s always fun to get into someone’s head and break them down.
