Ben & Jerry’s New Belgium Salted Caramel Brown-ie Ale

I like beer. I like ice cream. Ben & Jerry’s New Belgium Salted Caramel Brown-ie Ale combines the two. They use New Belgium Brown Ale ice cream and combine it with fudge brownies and salted caramel swirls. I was expecting to get a slight whiff of beer when I took off the lid, but it just smelled like normal ice cream. Well, I’ve never really smelled ice cream before but it didn’t seem to have much of an aroma at all. I took a spoonful and put it in my mouth. My first thoughts were that it was smooth and creamy and not much else. I took another bite, and then another, trying to find a distinguishing flavor, but there really isn’t one. It doesn’t taste like a brown ale at all. It’s bland. I can taste the caramel and brownies, but the New Belgium Brown Ale ice cream is more boring than vanilla. I was expecting an ice cream that tasted like beer. I just got ice cream. Meh. It’s a limited batch. It’s going away soon. Good.

Board Meeting (beer)

Board Meeting is an American Brown Ale from Port Brewing Company in San Marcos, California. It’s a Malt Beverage With Coffee And Cocoa Nibs. If there’s one thing that every beer needs more of, it’s cocoa nibs. And this beer has cocoa nibs. It’s very dark for a brown ale, it’s pours almost like a porter. It has a great aroma of roasted coffee, chocolate, and toasted malts. It tastes like you would expect. It’s malty with chocolate and coffee flavors, and there’s a little hazelnut and caramel, maybe some vanilla. It’s delicious and has a much better flavor profile than a Newcastle. It’s 8.5% so I would suggest drinking it after work and not before work.

Oaktown Brown Ale

Oaktown Brown Ale is a bold & soulful American brown ale from San Jose, California’s Calicraft Brewing Co. It has a rich malty aroma with hints of roast coffee, nuts, chocolate, caramel, and oak. It smells like it has a lot of flavor, but the first sip is disappointing. I can taste coffee, nuts, wood, roasted malts, chocolate, caramel, and toffee but it’s too thin and feels watered down. It’s not exciting. It’s bland. And you don’t want your craft beer to be bland. It has a 6.7% alcohol content, which is decent but not good. There’s not anything special about this beer. There’s nothing terrible about it, but I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone and I definitely wouldn’t expect to be hailed as a hero for bringing it to a party. It’s a boring and forgettable beer. Even the label is boring. The only reason to try it is to say that you tried it. And that’s not a good enough reason.

Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar

Oregon’s Rogue Ales is a popular microbrewery that receives national attention for their great craft brews. Hazelnut Brown Nectar is one of them. It’s award-winning. It says so on the label. It’s an American Brown Ale brewed with hazelnut extract. The hazelnut gives it a nutty aroma, and it also smells of chocolate and spice. It’s has a smooth and creamy mouthfeel, and it tastes of coffee, caramel, hazelnut, with a little bitter hops thrown in for balance. It’s a pretty good brown ale, but I don’t think it’s hazelnutty enough to have to have hazelnut in its name. Sure, you can taste it and smell it, but it doesn’t dominate the beer. The hazelnut is relatively subtle. It has an alcohol content of 6.2% so it makes for a good day drinking beer. It’s something that you can sip on and enjoy. I would pair it with a slice of toast and Nutella.

Lost Coast Brewery Raspberry Brown

Eureka, California’s microbrewery presents Raspberry Brown. This is a brown ale with a hint of raspberry. It is a little bit north of subtle, but it isn’t really fruity. There is a slight chocolate taste; it works well with the raspberry. I can only have one or two at a time; it is more of a dessert beer than one you drink to get shitfaced. If you like Newcastle, chocolate, or raspberries you need to try this beer. It is a great craft brew. If you did a good deed today, you deserve to reward yourself with this.
