Stone Enjoy By 04.20.14 IPA

Stone Brewing Company presents Enjoy By 04.20.14 IPA. It’s a limited release Double IPA and it comes with specific instructions to drink it by April 20th, 2014. They don’t want you to save it or age it. It’s a fresh brew that needs to be consumed as quickly as possible. And trust me, you’ll want to buy a few bottles so you can enjoy it before it disappears forever. This is a great Double IPA. It pours a clear golden color with a small white head. The nose is mostly piney hops, but I get a little citrus and whiffs of sweet malts. The flavor profile is a balance between pine and citrus hops with a malty backbone. It’s kind of sweet, but there is something spicy going on that I can’t quite put my finger on. It’s very mellow and smooth to drink, but the 9.4% alcohol content will sneak up on you. This is my kind of beer: a limited batch IPA from a great brewery and lots of subtle references to marijuana subculture. It’s made by Stone, it’s described as being devastatingly dank, and you have to drink it by 4/20. Motherfucking 4/20! If you’re lucky enough to stumble upon it, jump on it.

4:19

4:19 is a great time for a stoner. It means you still have time to get ready. If you glance at the clock and it’s already 4:20 there’s no way you can get set up in time. By the time you spark the bowl it’s 4:21 and your window of diplomatic immunity has closed. 4:19 is a minute away from the main event. It’s like Christmas Eve and 4:20 is like Christmas but better because it happens everyday. 4:19 means you’re approaching your favorite time of the day. Anticipation makes everything more exciting, and you won’t appreciate it if you aren’t looking forward to it.

Cleaning Your Piece

You probably have a pipe, bubbler and/or a bong if you smoke weed regularly. The more you use it, the more resin it accumulates. Too much resin and your piece gets clogged. If it’s too clogged you can’t smoke out of it. Then it’s time to clean it. You can get special cleaning supplies like Formula 420 and pipe cleaners, but salt, rubbing alcohol, and a paperclip will work just as well for half the cost. You get an odd sense of accomplishment from cleaning your piece that you don’t get from recycling beer cans. You shouldn’t be smoking drugs in the first place, but if you do then you should smoke from a clean and well-maintained piece.

420

April 20 or 4/20 is Stoner Christmas. It’s a day to celebrate marijuana. The best way to celebrate marijuana is to smoke vast amounts of it. It’s a day to be social and vocal and share your shit with anyone who wants a hit. If you’ve ever wanted to try it, this is the day to do it. I’m not advocating doing drugs, I’m simply saying that smoking weed will make you more popular.

There are a few different reasons why 420 is stonerly significant. The most commonly accepted origin story hails back to a magical time known as the ‘70s, when a group of high school kids from San Rafael, California would meet at 4:20 by a statue of Louis Pasteur and would search the area for a fabled marijuana garden. After a while, they would just start blazing at 4:20.

A lot of people are under the impression that 4/20 happens once a year. The fact is that 4:20 happens twice a day. A lot of former stoners come out of retirement once a year to celebrate 420. I celebrate 420 by smoking everyday all year.

4/20 is a day when marijuana is mainstream. Well, more mainstream than it usually is. Comedy Central and other cable stations will inevitably show a marathon of marijuana movies. CNN and other news networks will have a bunch of stories about weed. High school kids all over the world will be more red-eyed than usual. 7-Eleven will have a surge in Slurpee and munchies sales.

I was high when I wrote this. I hope you’re high as you read this. Happy 4/20.

Weed Wars

A Discovery Channel reality show that focuses on the medical marijuana industry and the politics and controversy that surrounds it.  The show follows the staff and patients of the Harborside Health Center in Oakland, CA. And it makes you wanna blaze.

The show provides a lot of insight as to how medical marijuana dispensaries function. The staff looks like regular people, they are ready for business but still have crazy dreads, facial hair and tattoos. They are professional stoners. Some are clerks, and they ask what the customer is looking for and what symptoms they have to better find a product to help them. Some work as purchasers who inspect a potential seller’s product. They check for molds, fungi, and the overall quality of the plant.

You meet a lot of patients while watching the show. Some are scamming the system, but a lot of the customers have debilitating problems and marijuana is the only thing that gives them relief from pain. You can clearly see why we need legal dispensaries where these patients can buy weed that is safe to smoke and safe to obtain. It would be a crime to close these clubs, because these people need them.

There is a lot of emphasis on states rights versus the federal law. A lot of conversation is devoted to the economics of the industry. Cannabis is worth billions; it is a huge cash crop. The plant provides a lot of jobs and tax revenue in a time of severe economic turmoil. We already lost the war on drugs; it is time to legalize it.

Vaporizers

The healthiest way to smoke if you want to make a career out of it. Vaporizers don’t actually burn the weed. Instead it heats it to the point the THC vaporizes and so you aren’t technically smoking because nothing is burning.

There are a few types of vaporizers. The cheaper ones are wooden boxes with a tube that you inhale from. The problem with these is that sometimes they aren’t heating properly and you just think you’re getting high but you are getting lightheaded from sucking on a tube for 5 minutes. The more expensive vaporizers are digital. The best one is the Volcano. It uses a giant plastic bag to capture all the THC vapor. Now they even have small portable vaporizers that you can recharge from your USB port. Because you aren’t burning the weed, the smell is hardly noticeable.  They are ideal if you have angry neighbors or if you wanna get high without your roomie trying to get in on it.

The downside is that you aren’t actually smoking weed. I like the act of sparking the lighter and passing the pipe or blunt around. Sucking on a tube and inhaling from a bag just doesn’t feel right.

Steamrollers

A steamroller is a large chamber with a bowl and a carb. It looks kind of like a bong without the water part. Very harsh, unfiltered smoke, but you get really big rips. They are typically glass. More portable than bongs, but they are pretty big. They are not that common.

Pipes

Pipes are the most common piece. They are usually made of glass, some are made of metal or wood or some other materials. There is a bowl and a carburetor with a small chamber to hold the smoke. There are lots of different designs ranging from simple shapes to complex ones. Without a screen you can get a lot of ash and suckthrough.

I can’t help but notice how many people don’t realize that they need to clean their piece. It won’t destroy the colors, it will just make it look sexy again.

Joints

Joints are small marijuana cigarettes. They are probably the most common way to get high. Very common in public, they are seen at concerts and in public parks and high school bathrooms. Desirable for deviants because as you smoke, you burn away the evidence. They can be harsh, because you inhale directly. It is constantly burning, so sometimes the wind smokes half of the joint.

Spliffs are joints that have tobacco added to the marijuana. You get a little bit of a buzz from the tobacco, and it makes for a different high. Very popular with Europeans and East Coasters. Always check with your smoking buddy before you add tobacco , its just courtesy.

Chillums

Chillums or sneak-a-tokes are smaller, easily concealable pipe. They usually are just the bowl and the chamber. Some look like cigarettes and can only handle a hit or two at a time. Great for concerts or when you need to sneak away before Thanksgiving dinner.

Bubblers

Bubblers are the culmination of glass smoking technology. Bubblers combine the portability of a hand pipe with the water filtration of a bong. There are usually one, two or three chambers which are partially filled with water that filters and cools the smoke, allowing the smoker a better tasting and less harsh hit.  Two or three chambers are ideal for the cleanest, best tasting smoke. One chamber can get dirty real quick, and there is nothing worse than an accidental taste of nasty bubbler water.

They are best if the pipe is cleaned and the water changed once a week. A little salt and rubbing alcohol will keep your pipe clean and new looking. Glass pieces are works of art, you have to take care of them to maintain their allure.

Bongs

Bongs are water filtered and have a large chamber to hold smoke. They have a stem with a removable bowl to clear the chamber. The water cools and filters the smoke and so you get massive hits.

They are made of different materials. Cheaper ones are made of plastic. Real bongs are usually made of glass. Glass is better. Roor bongs and other glass on glass pieces are the best.

Bongs can be anywhere from 8 inches to over 5 feet long. I think the optimal height is 2-3 feet for general use around the house. Great around the house, but they are too big and delicate to take with you everywhere.

Blunts

Blunts are like marijuana cigars. You roll the weed and wrap it in a gutted cigar or with a prepackaged blunt wrap. Probably the best way to get a group of people high before a movie or at a party. Also great if you have bammer weed. They can be harsh because you inhale directly. It wastes your weed if you smoke them all the time. You have to use around a gram or more for a decent blunt, and if you have a high quality strain you can’t enjoy the flavor and nuances of the plant.
