Covid-19

Kind of hard to have a blog and not discuss the elephant in the room: Coronavirus. Kinda hard not to be thinking about it since it took over the world. What started seemingly as a minor inconvenience has become a major disruption in life around the world. I went to Hawaii for a week in the beginning of March. I came back on the tenth to the beginning of a panic. Stores started running out of things. Work was a lot slower than usual. Then nonexistent. One job let me go and the other will be closed for three weeks or longer. I’m lucky that my rent is cheap and I have enough savings to get me through a month or two if I plan accordingly.

I’ve been doing what everyone else has been doing: taking it one day at a time. I’m trying not to freak out or panic. I don’t want this to be the new normal, but there’s a nagging feeling in the back of my mind that it might be the last time I’m out of the house for an extended period each time I run to the store. I try not to hoard but I’ll grab a canned good or some toilet paper or a household cleaner each time I’m out. Makes me feel like I’m doing something.

Netflix, HBO, Hulu, Disney+, and YouTube definitely help pass the time. I have a few books I want to read. We just bought a weed whacker so I foresee yard work in my future. Maybe I’ll teach my girlfriend how to finally play cribbage. In the mean time I’m trying to stay sane and healthy and not think about the inevitable zombies that come next.

People are dying, people are suffering, people are hurting, people are scared. I’m ok. I can’t complain so I won’t complain. It’s a crazy time for all of us. I’m glad we are in it together. Be happy, be safe, don’t get coughed on.

And holy shit, Jeff Bezos is going to make so much money off this apocalypse.

When Everybody Is Sick On Public Transportation

I can tell that it’s going to be a long winter when everybody is sick on public transportation. I live in San Francisco and it’s been raining and cold the last couple of days. That means whenever I get on the bus or train I hear a symphony of coughs, sniffles, and sneezes. There’s no such thing as silence, only sounds of sickness. There’s no escape from the germs and bacteria all around you. You know that it’s just a matter of time before you catch something and get sick too. Hopefully it’s just a cold and not Ebola. Or Swine Flu. Or SARS. Are we still scared of SARS? It’s hard to avoid getting sick when everybody else is, especially on public transportation. All you can do is use hand sanitizer every couple of minutes and try not to get sneezed on.

Emergen-C

I grab a few packets of Emergen-C every time I start sniffling and sneezing. Emergen-C is a powdered drink mix that contains a shitload of Vitamin C. Like a single packet has 1000 milligrams of Vitamin C. That’s 1667% of your recommended daily value. And they suggest taking it twice a day. That’s 3334%. That’s a whole lot of Vitamin C. It’s even more effective if you mix it with orange juice. If that doesn’t kick your cold’s ass, nothing will. It comes in a variety of flavors, like Super Orange, Tangerine, Raspberry, Lemon-Lime, Cranberry-Pomegranate, Pink Lemonade, Triple Berry… there are more but I never see them in stores so I don’t think that they are real. I tell friends to try Emergen-C whenever they are starting to feel a cold coming on. I’m not trying to help them; I just like telling people what to do.

Starting To Get Sick

I woke up with the sniffles and a runny nose and realized that I’m starting to get sick. Starting to get sick is worse than actually being sick. When you’re sick you’re just sick and you deal with it. All you can do when you start getting sick is take some vitamin C and hope that you’re not getting sick. You still have to suck it up and go to work. People will invite you to hang out and they won’t believe you when you say you can’t because you’re starting to get sick. That’s like saying you have to do laundry or wash your hair, it might be true but it’s a weak excuse. You’ll be peer pressured into going out when you know that you shouldn’t, and you’ll regret it the next day when you wake up fully diseased and phlegmy. Oh well, at least you’re not starting to get sick anymore.

Chicken Noodle Soup

It sucks being sick with a cold or flu. You have a fever, you have chills, maybe your nose is stuffed or runny. You just want to stay tucked in bed all day. You have to force yourself to drink hot tea, orange juice, and lots of fluids. The only good part of being sick is eating chicken noodle soup. It could be canned, it could be homemade, it doesn’t matter. You just want chicken noodle soup. It warms you up and makes you feel better if only for a moment. I feel bad for vegetarians with colds, because orange juice isn’t quite as satisfying.
