Playing Poker

I played poker the other night for the first time in a few years. It was a house game with some friends. I took that shit seriously. I downloaded some poker apps and started playing, studying as many flops as I could. I watched YouTube videos. I developed a strategy. And I dominated. I destroyed. I won the game and made my presence known. I made a hundred dollars. Yeah, a motherfucking Benjamin.

Poker was huge a decade ago. It was the game that kept you home on a Saturday night. You could get laid or you could make money. A lot of dudes chose to make money. For twenty bucks (plus maybe a couple of buy-backs) you can play cards with friends for hours on end and potentially make a profit. That sounds like a fun night. It was. It still is. Playing poker is a tradition for reason. Getting laid is always fun, but so is taking money out of your friend’s pocket.

Playing Cards

Everybody should have a set of playing cards. I’m talking about your standard fifty-two card deck. You know, Ace through King… Hearts, Clubs, Diamonds and Spades… Don’t forget the pair of Jokers. You can never be truly bored if you have cards. There are thousands of card games with a million variations. You can play Poker, Blackjack, Crazy Eights, Spoons, War, Bullshit, or Bridge with friends and family as a source of entertainment anytime and anyplace when you have a deck of cards. And you can always play Solitaire if you have no friends. Not a fan of games? You can also use cards for magic tricks. Do a solid card trick in front of a drunk crowd and blow their minds. I’m sure you’ll impress the ladies. Chicks dig magicians. If you don’t have a deck of cards in your house, you should. If you don’t have a house, that fucking sucks but maybe a deck of cards will help take your mind off of it. Playing cards. Get on it.

Craziest Poker Flop

I was hanging out with some friends during spring break a few years ago. There’s not much to do in my hometown, so we spent a Saturday night playing Texas Hold’em in my friend’s garage. It was a typical game with good plays and bad beats, but nothing memorable happened until I dealt out the craziest poker flop the world has ever known. It started out innocently enough. I dealt out two cards to everyone, bets were made, I burned a card and then flipped over three cards to reveal the flop: 6 of Hearts, 6 of Spades, and 6 of Clubs. 666. We kind of looked at each other because it’s not too often that the Number of the beast comes up in a flop. Then we heard a train whistle coming from my friend’s train-themed clock on the wall. It was midnight. My friend joked that it was also a full moon outside. There wasn’t a full moon, but I realized that it was now Easter Sunday. It seemed like a bad omen. Luckily the world didn’t end that day. I don’t remember how that hand ended and I don’t remember who won the game, but I’ll never forget that uneasy feeling in my stomach. I might have pooped a little bit.

Poker Night

Girls get together and go to brunch. Guys get together and have a poker night. Mimosas and cantaloupe are nice and all, but I prefer beer and gambling. Someone volunteers their house, a few guys bring poker sets, and everyone else brings booze and snacks. You decide on a game (you can’t go wrong with Texas hold’em), everyone puts in their cash and gets a stack of chips, and the next couple of hours are spent sitting around the table laughing, joking and occasionally crying. You feel great when you bluff your way to a big pot, you feel agony when you get a bad beat on the river, and you try to survive getting knocked out long enough to at least win your money back. Poker is kind of like Mario Kart: you can do everything right, be winning the whole time, and still lose when a random blue shell takes you out. That’s why I love it and that’s why I hate it. But poker nights are always fun.
