The Closing Shift

Friday night rolls around but you can’t have fun because you’re working the closing shift. Being the closer sucks sometimes. Yeah, you have a job and responsibility and that’s good, but you’re still stuck at work all night while you imagine everyone else out getting drunk and having sex with attractive strangers. Making money is all right but it’s more fun spending it. Closing shifts mean sacrificing your evening. You ever notice that you can’t spell “closer” without “loser?” Have fun tonight, I know I won’t because I’m closing.

Being On-Call

You get scheduled shifts for when you are supposed to work. Sometimes you’re a scheduled as an On-Call. That means that you have to call in and ask if they need to work that day. You might have to work if someone who was scheduled to work that day called out or if it’s going to be really busy. Being On-Call sucks. If you assume you won’t get called in and make plans, then you’ll be called in. If you plan on working, they won’t need you. It’s a catch-22. You can’t win.

Picking Up a Coworker’s Shift

You have the day off and plan on taking advantage of it. Until your phone rings. It’s your coworker and she wants to know if you’ll pick up her shift today. You politely say no, but she senses weakness and keeps on pressing you. She starts begging and whining and bullshitting why she needs you to work for her. She starts offering incentives like picking up any shift that you don’t want. You know she won’t ever actually return the favor, but at this point you just agree to work for her so she’ll shut up. So she ends up with the day off and you end up at work. How did that happen? I guess it’s better to make money but I prefer being lazy.
