Life Notes

I used to make daily life notes when I was growing up. From fifth grade until my sophomore year of college I would jot down what I did each day into a note pad. It was kind of like a diary or a journal, but I only gave a brief synopsis of what I did, who I hung out with, where I ate, what movies I saw, etc. I didn’t go into too much detail. It was a way of getting myself to try new things, to avoid falling into a pattern, and to remember what I’ve done.

I don’t know why I did it. I just did it. I’m glad that I did. I rediscovered my notebooks earlier tonight and spent the last hour reliving my senior year of high school. Like I know when I saw X2 for the first time (it was Friday May 5, 2003 at 11:15 AM). I know who I saw it with (Cody, Jimmy, and Michelle). I know that means I probably smoked weed before. I know that I ran into Marissa on the way home. I know that I hung out with Misha later and then Megan after that. I might have forgotten everything entirely, but when I see it written down in my chicken scratch the memories come flooding back. That’s the point of memories: to remember them.

I kind of wish that I kept taking life notes but Facebook does that for me now.

Damn, That Was a Year Ago?!?

Tick tock goes the clock and there’s nothing you can do to stop it. I’ve learned that life has to be lived in the moment because that’s when it’s happening. If you do it right then good moments become good memories. Social media makes it easier to remember a lot of things because we document so much of our lives these days. I’ve noticed that Facebook has started showing me pictures of events and milestones on their anniversaries. I’ll see a picture of me and some friends sitting in a tree drinking beer and think to myself, “Damn, that was a year ago?!?” The memories will come flooding back, I’ll smile and reminisce for a minute, and then I’ll repost it and tag the people involved so we can all bask in the golden glow of the good old days. Memories aren’t memories unless you remember them from time to time.

Rediscovering a Song

There are times in your life where you fall in love with a song and listen to it ad nauseam until you hate it and never want to hear it again, and so you don’t for several years. Then by chance you hear it on the radio or blasting from a friend’s stereo and it only takes a few moments before you fall back in love with it. Rediscovering a song is a great feeling, it’s almost like hearing the song for the first time. You remember all the times that you sang it at the top of your lungs, all the times it played out as the soundtrack to your life. I was born in 1985 and grew up in the nineties. Every corny rock song from that era is relevant to me and transports me back to when I was a badass ten-year-old on the playground. It’s not even just rock, even a Seal song or some Dru Hill will make me have flashbacks to middle school dances. Rediscovering a song is one of the main reason that I’ve never thrown out old CD mixes that I downloaded and burnt myself in the Napster era, when a single song took twenty minutes to download and I only had an hour before my mom would come home and kick me off the computer. Music is an important part of life and rediscovering songs is like flipping through a photo album.

Brain Fart

Your phone buzzes, you go to answer it, but then your mind goes blank and you completely forget your passcode. You can’t remember it at all. It starts to drive you crazy. You know your passcode by heart. You enter it into your phone every fifteen minutes. And for some reason you can’t recall those four simple digits for the life of you. You’re having a brain fart. That’s when you forget something that you know you know, like your Social Security number or what you need to make a BLT. Brain farts happen all the time. Can’t remember your kindergarten teacher’s name? Brain fart. Can’t find your fork until you look at your hand? Brain fart. Can’t remember who wrote Harry Potter? Brain fart. Can’t remember why you walked into a room? Brain fart. They are a part of life. Get used to them. All you can do is hope that you’re not on a game show when your brain starts farting.
