Being on TV

Everyone wants to be a little famous. You want people to know who you are. It’s human nature. That’s why everyone gets so excited about being on TV. You see it all the time. There’s always some jackass waving his arms and ruining the shot whenever a reporter is doing a live segment on location. People will make clever signs to get camera time at sporting events. They’ll sign the consent form to show their face on Cops. They’ll talk about shit they don’t know about if it means that they’ll be on the 6 o’clock news. I know because I’ve done it. I’m guilty, I’ll admit it. Being on TV is always a thrill. I once saw myself shaking my head in disbelief on SportsCenter Top 10 in the background of a botched SF Giants play. I once camped out all night on the street to get into The Price is Right during Bob Barker’s last year. It was worth it. I was on TV. National TV. Millions of people saw me even if they don’t know it. That doesn’t make me a celebrity but I still feel like one. Get on TV if you haven’t and you’ll see what I mean.

Someone with a Famous Name

I know George Romero. Correction, I know a George Romero. He didn’t direct all those zombie flicks, he just happens to be named George Romero. Everyone knows someone with a famous name. I’m sure you have a friend with the same moniker as a celebrity. You should take advantage of it. Try namedropping and you’ll see how much easier it is to get reservations at a restaurant or to get a table at the club. Feign ignorance if the managers or security gives you shit for it. I said “Zack Efron,” not “Zac Efron.” I can see how you’d be confused, but it’s not my fault my name got famous. It’s still your table even if you duped them into it. Don’t feel too bad.

Approaching a Celebrity

You’re walking down a crowded city sidewalk when a familiar face passes you by. It takes you a moment to realize that it’s not somebody that you know personally, it’s a celebrity. It’s somebody famous. And this is your only chance to say something to that celebrity so you have to say something. But what do you say? Approaching a celebrity is a real life scenario that they never prepare you for in school. There is no set etiquette other than don’t grope them and don’t stalk them. Most of the time when you see a celebrity you don’t do make an attempt to meet them, you just mention that you saw so-and-so at such-and-such to your friends later. But sometimes you come across a celebrity that was in your favorite TV show, movie, or who plays for your favorite team and you have to say something to them because they truly inspire you and this might be your only chance to say something to them. Start by saying their name so that they know that you know who they are and that you’re not confusing them with somebody else (Samuel L. Jackson is not Laurence Fishburne, Bill Pullman is not Bill Paxton). Then say that you’re a big fan of whatever they did for whatever reason. Then ask them what you wanted to ask them. Extend your hand if you want a handshake. Take out your camera if you want a picture. Take out a pen if you want an autograph. Get to the point. And don’t take it personally if they dismiss you. The more famous the celebrity, the more people approach them and the less likely they will humor you. Don’t get butthurt if they ignore you or snub you. Just don’t be a creeper.
