Adventure Day

Every couple of weeks I will get a random day off in the middle of the week and sometimes a friend will have the same day off too. I can’t afford to lose those days. I turn them into adventure days. An adventure day is when you go out and do a bunch of spontaneous activities. Go hiking, go biking, try spelunking. Go to the beach and dig a hole. Go to the park and climb a tree. Explore downtown and find a new restaurant to try, walk into a shop that you always walk by, or see how many pigeons it takes to eat a hot dog (it’s probably around seven). The point is that you have to take advantage of the time you have while you have it. And so you go on adventures. They don’t have to swashbuckling. They just have to be genuine. Adventure day doesn’t come around that often. Do it while you can.

Nickname

A nickname is an alternative/casual name for a person, place, or pet. Some people use generic nicknames: Robert will go by Bob. Richard will go by Rick or Dick. William becomes Will, Bill, Willy, or Billy. Those are cliché nicknames that don’t have any real meaning. A real nickname is something that you earn. It’s a badge of honor. Not everybody gets one. Some people get stuck with bad nicknames that become impossible to escape. My friend shat himself at a high school party and is still known as The Party Pooper almost ten years later. But a good nickname is a sign of endearment. If someone creates a good nickname for you, you should embrace it and consider yourself lucky. A good nickname can also double as an inside joke, and you can reminisce and reflect about how you got your nickname every time somebody says it. It’s like a bonding experience. I recently went on a trip to Vegas with a few friends, and we all came back with new nicknames for each other. You can’t force a nickname. The best nicknames are spur of the moment creations and are completely spontaneous. But they will last for a lifetime if they fit your personality.

Spontaneous

You can never plan on having a good time, it just has to happen. Sure, you can plan a vacation to Disneyland or save money for a week in Paris, but those trips will never be as fun as a spur-of-the-moment weekend camping trip. Whenever you plan an event or party you stress out over the invitations, the entertainment, the food, the drinks… there’s a lot of time and effort involved in making the event a success, but something always goes wrong. You expect the things that you plan to be perfect and they never will be. That’s why your birthday usually sucks. That’s why New Year’s Eve usually sucks.  But you live in the moment when you don’t plan things out. You enjoy life more when you just go with the flow and roll with it. There are times when you go out for a drink and it turns into something special. A quick decision to take the bus instead of driving can change your whole life. The funniest things you say come from the top of your head; a gem of joke will pop out of your mouth that is funnier than anything you’ve ever heard. It’s fun not knowing what you will do or say next. It’s good to have a life plan, but I like living day to day, moment to moment. Spontaneity is a blessing. Embrace it. Just don’t spontaneously combust.
