Sitting in One Spot and Watching the World Change Around You

I went to my friend’s apartment the other night and we ended up perched on top of the fire escape drinking beer and sipping wine. It was right in the heart of downtown San Francisco, a block or two away from Union Square. It made for some terrific people watching to say the least. We saw tourist after tourist gawking at buildings and taking pictures of the cable cars. We saw angry drivers honking and yelling at bikers and pedestrians. We saw cars leaving parking spots and others swooping in instantly. We saw one guy drive up the wrong way of a one way street. He didn’t cause any accidents, but he didn’t make any friends either. We watched the sun set and the city became a different place. There’s nothing quite like sitting in once spot and watching the world change around you. It makes you realize that life happens whether you’re apart of it or not, aware of it or not. I’d rather be aware. I prefer people watching over binge watching something on Netflix.

Eavesdropping

Eavesdropping is the auditory equivalent of people watching, only you are secretly listening in on their conversation instead of discretely looking at them. It works really well if you have headphone in without any music playing. People have loose tongues if they think that nobody is paying attention. They say that the world is full of assholes and idiots. Eavesdropping confirms that. You shouldn’t speak unless it’s worth saying. Most of the things you hear are stupid and trivial, but occasionally you overhear some interesting tidbits or juicy gossip, and that’s reason enough to keep eavesdropping. The most important thing to remember about eavesdropping is keeping yourself from butting in. You’re just listening to the conversation; you aren’t a part of it.

Peering Out From Your Blinds

I have a room with a window that overlooks a fairly busy street. I live in a major city, I’m right by an intersection, there’s a bus stop… sometimes shit happens. And when it does, I’m not above gawking. But nobody wants to be caught staring so you have to be discrete. Peering out from your blinds is the way to go. Venetian blinds are ideal for people watching. That’s probably why they are so common. The next time that you’re waiting at the bus stop, look around and see if anybody is watching you. I guarantee that someone is looking at you from behind some blinds somewhere.

People Watching

People are fascinating. There are billions of us, scurrying around all over the place, each one of us doing our own thing. It’s fun to sit up on a balcony over a busy street and just watch the little puppets below acting out their lives oblivious to you watching them. You’ll see old ladies inching their way down the sidewalk. You’ll notice little brothers annoying their older sisters. You’ll observe homeless guys muttering to themselves. You’ll hear a douche on the phone saying the same thing over and over and over. You’ll spot the most awkward and opposite couple making out and laugh at the thought of them having sex. And you might feel bad for judging them but if you go people watching long enough, you can’t help but hate the human race. Or pity them.
