When an Old Friend Visits Your City and Doesn’t Tell You

I woke up this morning and did my usual routine, which of course involves checking Facebook and seeing what the world is up to. I saw my friend’s feed, on which he posted several images of the Golden Gate Bridge and various San Francisco landmarks with a caption reading, “Great weekend in a great city!” I agreed with his caption, but couldn’t help feel slighted because this friend is from another country and doesn’t come out to California too often. He should have told me he was coming. I would have bought him a beer. It’s a shitty feeling when an old friend visits your city and doesn’t tell you. It makes you feel left out and unwanted. And you are. And there’s no way to get back at them, short of going to their city and posting pictures of their landmarks. Ain’t nobody got time for that. I’ll just stick to writing passive-aggressive blog posts.

A Stranger Who Turns Out to be an Acquaintance

I was playing disc golf with my friend and was about to tee off when a guy started walking towards us. We waited to throw until he got there and offered to let him go ahead of us so we wouldn’t hold him up. He suggested that we just play together. As we made small talk, I noticed that he seemed really familiar, someone from way back in the day. It turns out that his son and I were childhood friends. We played on a few soccer teams together and we were Indian Guys for a few years. It had been almost twenty years since we last crossed paths. It’s kind of funny how you can remember random people from your childhood but can’t remember people from college. Nothing proves how small the world is like a stranger who turns out to be an acquaintance.

Catching Up With An Old Friend

You meet people, you form friendships, and sometimes you drift apart. It’s nobody’s fault, it’s just a fact of life. In the old days, they would just be a distant memory. Nowadays, Facebook makes sure you know when their birthday is. At least once a year you can post a message on their wall and reestablish contact without being a creeper. Then you will inevitably make plans to meet up and hang out like you did in the glory days. Catching up with an old friend is one of the best things in life. Especially when you can just pick up a conversation where you left off, despite it being months or years since you’ve last seen each other. You might not hang out all the time now, but they are always there for you.
