A Map of All the Places You’ve Been

My roommate has a map of the United States on the wall. She puts little flags in all the cities, national parks, and places that she’s been. It’s like a visual representation of where she’s traveled, and it’s a great idea. So naturally I have to one up her. I plan on getting a map of the world so I can start putting up flags in all the places I’ve gone to. Right now there wouldn’t be too many flags, but that’s just motivation for me to get my ass to somewhere new. A map of all the places you’ve been makes you realize that the world is a big place and there is so much to see and do. You have to venture out of your bubble every once in a while to have unforgettable experiences that you can bore people with at Christmas parties for years to come. So get a map and some little flags and start to document where you’ve been, and think about where the next flag should go.

Giving a Stranger Directions

I had a closing shift at work the other night and got out late. It was nearly midnight by the time I got to the subway station. All I wanted was to catch the first train and get home as soon as possible. As I was waiting for the train, a tourist came up to me and asked me how to get to his hotel. He told me the cross streets and showed me the general vicinity on a paper map that he was carrying. The map didn’t show any transit lines so I busted out Google Maps on my iPhone to find out the best way to get there. I found out the best route for him to take, and it turns out that my train was going his way. So I told him to follow me and I would tell him where and when to get off. I showed him the route that Google Maps recommended and handwrote the directions onto his paper map. We got to his stop, I pointed the way for him to walk, and I wished him luck. He thanked me a thousand times and I told him not to worry about it a thousand times. Giving a stranger directions is good karma. Especially when you take the time to give him the right directions. I should go buy a lotto ticket and capitalize.

Folding a Map

Maps were a way of getting from Point A to Point B before the days of GPS and smart phones. These days you only use a map when you’re playing Grand Theft Auto V. You unfold the map, spread it out, and try to find the road that will take you from where you are to where you want to go. Then you fold have to fold the map back up into it original form. But that’s harder than you think. Folding a map is a lot harder than reading a map. Reading a map just requires common sense and a vague sense of direction. Folding a map is always a challenge. It’s hard to find the correct creases. You always end up folding one part the wrong way. You’ll fold it hot dog when you should have folded it hamburger. Folding a map is hard. It takes practice. Most people get frustrated and hand it over to somebody else to fold it for them. Everyone has a little OCD when it comes to folding maps.
