Curling

We are in the midst of the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics and curling is once again taking the world by storm. Curling is like shuffleboard on ice. It’s one of the few sports that seems accessible to everyone. I’m thirty-two years old and know that I can never win a medal with a snowboard, skis, or ice skates, but I have a chance to compete with a broom in my hand.

Instead of getting drunk and going bowling, I want to get a group together to drink and go curling. It seems like a leisurely activity with plenty of time to chat and socialize without being overly physical. Plus you can set your beer down on the ice between turns and keep it cold. You can’t do that while bowling.

Bowling Shoes

I went to the bowling alley a few weeks ago with some friends. One of them brought a pair of bowling shoes. We assumed that she must have been a good bowler if she had bowling shoes. This is why you just never assume anything about anybody. Because she sucked. She sucked big time. She got more gutter balls than pins. It sounds funny, but it was painful to watch. It was pathetic to watch. She sucked. She sucked hard. She sucked harder than, oh, let’s say Madonna on Dennis Rodman’s dick and that’s saying something. That’s not a timely reference but it will do.

Bowling

Bowling is a game where you roll a ball down a narrow lane in an attempt to knock over ten pins. There are professional bowlers and tournaments, but most bowling games are casual contests between friends. You’ll go down to the nearest bowling alley, rent a few lanes and a pair of ugly shoes, maybe grab a few beers, and play a couple of games. Bowling is easy to learn, but hard to master. Professional bowlers try to get twelve strikes in a row for a perfect game. Casual bowlers just try to keep the ball out of the gutter and feel satisfied with the occasional strike. The most difficult thing about bowling is learning how to keep score. Luckily most bowling alleys have computers that keep track for you. Bowling is fun on the Wii, but it’s better in real life. The sound of powerful strike is one of the most satisfying sounds in sports. But not many things are as agonizing as a gutter ball and I bowl a lot more of those.
