Scooter Wiley

One of the best ways to get psyched up for baseball season is to start playing baseball video games, and the best baseball video game out right now is MLB The Show. I don’t have the newest one, but my roommate has last season’s so I had to settle for playing that. I decided to create my own character, a shortstop with dreams of making it to the big leagues. Choosing his position and deciding on his physical attributes was easy, but coming up with his name was a challenge. His first name had to a casual and fun nickname. His last name had to be two simple syllables. I tossed around a few potential names before deciding to call him Scooter Wiley. Scooter Wiley seems like the ultimate baseball name, up there with Buster Posey and Homer Bailey. Scooter Wiley seems believable. If I told you that the Chicago Cubs drafted an unknown prospect named Scooter Wiley, you wouldn’t doubt it for a second. In fact, I’m surprised that there’s not already a minor leaguer out there with that moniker. Or maybe there is and he sucks so much that he’s not even Googleable.

Tetris

Tetris is just one step in the Soviet Scheme to take over the world. Step 2 is Rocky IV. And step 3 involves vodka and AK-47s. I was pretty bored the other day and decided to buy Tetris for my iPhone. It’s only 99 cents and money grows on trees, so I downloaded it and started playing it. Big mistake. Everyone knows that Tetris is addicting. I just didn’t think that it would take over my life. I play it on the train to work. I play it before I clock in. I play it on my lunch break. I play it on the train ride home. And then I play it some more to relax. I’m not even that good at it. But the OCD side of me wants to keep Tetrising. Those damn falling blocks haunt my dreams and control my life. Games are supposed to be fun, not habit-forming addictions that destroy your life. Oh yeah, in Soviet Russia, game plays you.

Video Game Accomplishment

Have you ever been proud of yourself for doing something mundane? Like reorganizing your movie collection by genre or replacing your shower curtain? These are video game accomplishments. It is the feeling you get when you finally beat a difficult boss or beat a game. You didn’t really accomplish anything. You feel like you did something, but you really just wasted your time and now you are a little bit closer to death. Oh wow, you read all the Hunger Game books in a week?!? Video game accomplishment. Oh wow, you cooked two dishes and posted it on Facebook instead of going out to eat?!? Video game accomplishment. Oh wow, you have a blog and bitch about things on the internet?!? Video game accomplishment. Oh, I made myself sad.
