Drake’s Denogginizer

Drake’s Denogginizer is an Imperial IPA from Drake’s Brewing Company in San Leandro, CA. It’s a well rounded India Pale Ale with a nice citrus hop aroma. I get whiffs of lemon, grapefruit, and orange peel, as well as rich caramel malts and pine resin. It explodes on your tongue with pine and citrus hops with a nice bready malt backbone. I can taste a little caramel and fruity sweetness as well, but it’s a primarily a bitter, hoppy beer. It has a relatively hefty alcohol content of 9.75%, so you only need a few bottles to feel good enough to take on the world. It’s a good beer, but the label is kind of frustrating because it’s so chaotic. It’s jumbled and convoluted and an eyesore. Your label should be simple and easy to read because you want people to know the name of your product. You lose points for making me think. I don’t want to think. I just want a fucking beer.

Heretic Evil Cousin

Evil Cousin is a massively hoppy Imperial IPA from Pittsburg, California’s Heretic Brewing Co. It’s a companion beer to their Evil Twin Red Ale, but I think it’s better than Evil Twin. I prefer IPAs over Red Ales, it has an 8% ABV as opposed to Evil Twin’s 6.8% ABV, and there’s a lot more emphasis on the hops. If you like hops, you’ll like this beer. It has a rich grapefruit and piney hop scent, and you can really taste the hops in the brew. I taste pine, grapefruit, citrus, resin, and spicy hops. You also get a little malty sweetness that really allows the hops to stand out. It’s a well-rounded West Coast Double IPA, and definitely worth drinking again. Plus it has a cool name and a cool label, so you look cool when you drink it.

Speakeasy Double Daddy Imperial IPA

San Francisco has a few amazing microbreweries and Speakeasy is one of them. They have a Prohibition/old-timey gangster theme that is evident in their naming of products and in the artwork on the labels. Double Daddy Imperial IPA continues the trend and has a backroom poker theme, proclaiming that it’s doubling down on the malt and hops with its no-limit style. It’s kind of a sequel to their Big Daddy IPA, only with more hops and more malt, and it’s also Imperial now. It has a malty scent with a caramel and pine aroma. You can really taste the malt when it first hits your tongue, but it’s balanced out by grapefruit and pine hops. It’s smooth and sweet and bold with flavor. The nice 8.5% alcohol content will make you feel warm and fuzzy inside. It’s beers like this that make me wonder why people still drink Bud Light.
