Tip Before You Eat

I think it’s time that we sit together as a society and rethink our tipping procedure. There are a lot of douchebags that take advantage of the current tipping procedure. They will complain about drinks and food in an attempt to get free things. They will change their order ten minutes after the server rang it in. They will rack up a three hundred dollar bill and stiff the server on the tip. The server shouldn’t have to deal with that. I think that we should tip before we eat. It makes perfect sense. Your server/bartender should know if you’re a cheap asshole before they go out of their way to help you. If you tip well, then you would get better service. If you don’t tip well, then you get the service that you deserve. You get what you pay for in a perfect world. I don’t care how nice a table is, they don’t deserve good service if they don’t tip well. I don’t care how miserable a table is, they don’t deserve bad service if they tip well. The problem is that servers don’t know who is cheap and who is a decent human being until the table settles the bill or runs away. You should tip before you eat and get the service that you deserve. If you pledge 18% to your server beforehand, he/she will be more willing to help you out. And if food comes out wrong or your server fucks up, the bill will be discounted, but the server would still make 18%. Everyone wins.

I 100% DISAGREE. If my server messed up, I’d rather not tip my server well than to have a discount honestly. It’s not fair they get paid a good tip to ruin my outing. I want to ruin their tip if they ruin my outing. What’s fair is fair!

Also, in most cases, they don’t discount things a lot of times anyways. Sometimes when they do, it’s a free dessert, not something off the bill which would be better for the customer in most cases. The restaurant managers usually give away a free dessert instead of taking money off the bill because it’s cheap to do that compared to taking money off the bill. I bet that dessert that is $5.99 only cost $2.99 if that.

While I understand your frustration, I am not an unfair tipper. I tip FAIRLY. That means I go by the service. I wouldn’t EVER go out to eat if I had to be forced to tip. I want my server to *EARN* their pay. I want them to not ruin my outing. If they truly make an honest mistake where they actually put forth 100% EFFORT(which 98% of servers today DO NOT such as compare their written order to the food for obvious errors like missing condiments, wrong side dishes, etc.), then they probably will apologize for the issue and get a discount off my bill for my inconvenience. I am finding today, most servers don’t give a care about you at all, but then want your money.

There is not incentive nor would their be a way to make more doing it your way.

Sorry, I totally disagree. Most good servers make good money. Just maybe you aren’t a good server? I don’t know, just saying some servers we request have told us they make more than the kitchen staff. WHY? Because they bust their asses. They are checking the food for obvious errors BEFORE they leave the kitchen. They aren’t be lazy on the job.

Why would you only want to make 18% when you could make 25%-30% or more? I would rather get a chance to make more and *EARN* my way if I were a server to have some INCENTIVE to do lots of work like getting someone their 8th refill. I mean, who wants to do more work, but the same pay as a table that has people that only get one refill, but the same bill amount, got the same pay? I know I wouldn’t want that. I don’t know anyone that would want that.

I hope that we keep tipping to try to control our server’s behavior to improve our service. If you knew you got 18% no matter what, WHAT INCENTIVE would their be to *CARE* if my order was obviously correct or not if if a person at my table has their 7th refill? You wouldn’t want to do a lot of work and only get 18%. If you want guaranteed money, go get an hourly waged job such as working in a office(clerical work) or a store like the mall, etc. A good chunk of those jobs have benefits even.

I just don’t want to pay my server 18% if they messed up my meal. That’s not fair nor is it right! While I understand that some customers are cheap jerks that are changing their order, etc. NOT EVERYONE is like that. In fact, most people don’t do that in general and you know it!

    • I don’t think you know how a restaurant actually works. You’re not just tipping the server. You’re tipping the bussers, the bartenders, the food runners too. And by not tipping the server, you’re also not tipping a few other people. Does the busser deserve to be stiffed because your server didn’t fill up your iced tea fast enough? It’s pretty obvious that you’ve never worked in a restaurant and you look down on servers. I like to serve. I choose to serve. I work in a great place with great people (with great benefits like health insurance and 401k), and I genuinely have a good time at work. But it’s people in your mindset that remind me what a drag the human race can be sometimes. Don’t go out to eat if you don’t want to tip. It’s as simple as that.

  2. “I don’t think you know how a restaurant actually works. You’re not just tipping the server. You’re tipping the bussers, the bartenders, the food runners too.”

No, *YOU* actually don’t know. If I stiff a server, they *********************STILL******************** have to tip out the busser, the hostess or host, and the bartender a percentage of sales. That means I am not tipping those people, my *********SERVER*********** IS!

Do you see a tip line for each person on the credit card line for “host, busser, bartender, and server? I don’t. I see *ONE* tip and that is *WHO* I am tipping. I am tipping my server. I am not tipping anyone else.

When a customer stiffs, *THEIR SERVER* is actually *PAYING THEIR ******OWN MONEY****** to tip out the busser, host or hostess, and bartender.

So NO, you don’t know anything!

“And by not tipping the server, you’re also not tipping a few other people.”

NO, as I said before, I am ONLY giving money to my server!

“:Does the busser deserve to be stiffed because your server didn’t fill up your iced tea fast enough?”

Yes, because I am not tipping the busser. NOBODY IS TIPPING THE BUSSER BUT THE SERVER YOU STUPID IDIOT! YOU ARE IGNORANT!

I AM NOT TIPPING THE BUSSER. Whether I leave money on the credit card receipt or actual cash, I am paying my server, NOT them. YOU ARE STUPID!

Why are servers on blogs complaining about if you stiff that they have to pay to serve the customer if you were right, huh?

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/01/31/1183720/-Applebee-s-Fires-Waitress-for-Posting-No-Tip-Receipt-That-Said-I-Give-God-10-You-Get-Nothing#

“that if you don’t tip a server, and therefore are making them pay to serve you, that that could be considered theft. You’re essentially taking money out of their pocket. by The Dude 415 on Thu Jan 31, 2013 at 09:54:16 PM PST”

WHY are people saying this if that’s not true, huh?

“It’s pretty obvious that you’ve never worked in a restaurant”

It’s pretty obvious *YOU* haven’t, because you would know that if you don’t get a tip from someone that you still OWE the busser, the host or hostess, and the bartender their share of the SALES, NOT out of tip, out of ************SALES************** most place have tip outs. Even if a restaurant which I have seen one server before on a blog say it was out of tip, the person that is tipping is only tipping their *SERVER*, NOT the other workers. The SERVER is tipping the other people MORON IGNORANT IDIOT! YOU SOUND LIKE YOU HAVE NEVER WORKED IN A RESTAURANT, because EVERYONE KNOWS THIS BUT YOUR STUPID ASS!

    “you look down on servers”

Because most don’t try their best.

“Don’t go out to eat if you don’t want to tip. ”

WHERE the HELL are you getting I don’t tip from, huh? I NEVER ONCE SAID THAT! My husband and I tip 25%-30% and upwards at times for wonderful service as well as anything from zero to 24% as well, because we tip based on *SERVICE*, NOT anything else.

The busser is not in my service, the bartender is not in my service and the hostess is *BEFORE* my service starts, therefore, NONE of those people count in my service YOU STUPID NITWIT IDIOT!

WHY would I care what the bartender does if they aren’t at my table, huh?

WHY care what a busser does after I have left, the service is over with, so that doesn’t count either?

I would say the hostess is seating you and giving you menus(unless the menus are on the table already with utensils(unless they are on the table), but that is before you get seated or as you are being seated. It’s still not service.

TIPS ARE FOR *************SERVICE************ MORON! So YEAH, the busser it’s 100 BILLION TRILLION PERCENT FAIR FOR THE BUSSER TO GET NO TIP AT ALL. They aren’t in my service to get a tip STUPID IDIOT! YOU ARE DUMB, IGNORANT, and an IDIOT!

WHY don’t you know any of this if you have served before? I never have, but I know more than you do, so what does that tell you IDIOT?

Whatever *YOU* tip your co-workers MEANS NOTHING, NOTHING, NOTHING to the customer. The customer is ONLY TIPPING THEIR SERVER, ONLY TIPPING THEIR SERVER, ONLY TIPPING THEIR SERVER, GOT IT IGNORANT IDIOT? Except for me, because I DON’T TIP.

What is the busser doing for me while I am there? NOTHING. He didn’t clean the table or set it up before I sat down. It just magically happened.

While the bartender is making my drink, so is the cook making my food, but I am not tipping the cook, same thing.

I AM AN IDIOT that has NO COMMON SENSE TO SPEAK OF AND NO KNOWLEDGE OF HOW TIPPING OUT WORKS!

  3. No, I am not a troll and I DO TIP A LOT! You have NO CLUE OF WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT! I PROVED YOU WRONG AND YOU ARE JUST MAD, ADMIT THAT!

Nobody is tipping those other people but the server! Why would anyone tip a busser when bussers are used *AFTER* the customer has left? The service is over, so is the tipping, because tips are for actual “SERVICE”, not for something that occurs *AFTER* the customer has left. YOU ARE DUMB! Do you like paying for things you don’t receive? Nobody does but you apparently.

I LIKE STARTING ARGUMENTS WITH STRANGERS ONLINE! I DON’T HAVE ANYTHING BETTER TO DO!

    • I genuinely want to know if you remove that giant stick from up your butt when you sit down at a restaurant or if you keep it in for the entire meal. I’ve seen your WordPress blog. You have one post about bad service and you have a habit of trolling other WordPress blogs looking for articles about service/tipping. It’s kind of sad. I think you need a new hobby. Maybe you should take up smoking. That would relieve a lot of your stress.

      • Maybe you do since I have seen you as well HYPOCRITE! Look in the mirror as to this is what you are doing as well. I wrote one blog post about service four years ago. You write two articles every single day about everything and anything. You obviously have a lot more things to say than me, and I don’t like that.

Also, you have nothing to say back to me, because I told you the GOD’S TRUTH that NOBODY is tipping the bussers, hostess or host, or the bartenders when you get a server to serve you. YOUR SERVER IS TIPPING THOSE PEOPLE! IF I DON”T BELIEVE IN TIPPING, NOBODY ELSE HAS THE RIGHT TO EITHER!

I DON’T LIKE TIPPING BECAUSE I AM CHEAP!

      • I have nothing to say back to you because you wouldn’t hear it anyway.

      • Because you can’t PROVE ME WRONG LIKE I CAN AND YOU KNOW IT! I AM A MISERABLE PERSON!

      • Yup, your capital letters convinced me I was wrong.

      • No, the proof that I don’t tip those other people. What NAME is on the credit card receipt? My server’s name. If I pay with cash, *WHO* do I give it to? MY SERVER! But that’s only if I do tip, which I will never do, because I am cheap and miserable! My server should be miserable too.

SO YEAH, I know I am right and you know I am right, so why don’t you just admit the GOD’S TRUTH for once, huh? I AM GOD! I DON’T NEED TO TIP

I’ve never worked in a restaurant before and I don’t know what I am talking about, but I will KEEP STRESSING MY POINT. I DON’T WANT TO TIP. I WANT PEOPLE TO BE AS ANGRY AS ME. I AM A TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE PERSON.

  4. Your mother should have swallowed the load from which you came.

  5. I DON’T LIKE TIPPING! Get over it! I just want everyone to suffer through life as much as me! I enjoy insulting strangers and stiffing servers because it makes me feel better about myself! IS THAT SO WRONG?!? IDIOT ASSHOLE MORON JERK!

    • Ok Springs1, you can do whatever you want. I really don’t care if you tip or not. You win. I’m wrong and you are right. I’m glad that you convinced me with your logical and reasonable explanations. Thanks for sharing your views with me, you totally changed my whole perspective on life.
